"MYLES CONCERT TO FEATURE YORKE AS OPENING ACT": The Citizen-Record, April 2012
PARRSBORO - The Parrsboro Band Hall will open its concert performance series this year with ECMA award winner David Myles on April 7. Myles is nominated for two more ECMA awards this year, with the event planned for the following weekend in Moncton, NB.
But this weekend's concert in Parrsboro will feature even more than Myles. Opening the show will be Bass River native Alana Yorke, an up-and-coming artist turning heads on the music scene.
Yorke, who also has ties in Cumberland County, recently filmed a video for her latest single, "The Weight", inspired by her experiences since running out of air while scuba diving in Nova Scotia. The video was filmed underground at the "Diefenbunker" in Debert.
"The song, 'The Weight' is basically about the desire to emerge from the patterns of negative self-limiting thoughts and behaviours," she said.
"On another level, parts of the song were inspired by an accident that happened to me a few years ago while scuba diving and the experiences that I've had since that event in my life. The project has been a huge catalyst for my healing and my emergence as an artist."
The video has already caught the eye of people in the industry, including music development officer Mickey Quase of the Nova Scotia Culture Division.
"I was completely entranced from the outset of the piece - and it wasn't until the end I realized I hadn't taken a breath the whole time," said Quase.
"It was totally spellbinding."
Yorke is familiar to both visitors and residents of Amherst. She worked in the area during summers as a high school student as a bagpiper at the provincial border, and also worked an internship at Tantramar Theatre in 2002 and appeared in its production of "Trial By Jury".
Tickets for the 8 p.m. show can be ordered by phone at 254-3674, online at www.thehall.ca, or at Sweet Brier Boutique in Parrsboro.
